is the development and swelling of the breast tissue in boys or men, caused by an imbalance of hormones. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, sometimes unevenly.  In addition to being extremely difficult to cope with mentally, gynecomastia can also cause breast pain and lactation in men and boys.
The mental health drug Risperdal has been recently linked to gynecomastia - this side-effect has devastated thousands of adolescent boys, most of whom were already dealing with difficult mental health issues.  Adolescence is hard enough for young boys without the added hardship, pain, and embarrassment of enlarged breasts.  Now our the experienced pharmaceutical attorneys have discovered that its manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson-owned Jansen Pharmaceuticals, may have known, and concealed, this side effect to increase its own profits.  This is the claim made in several lawsuits related to Risperdal-induced gynecomastia that have already been settled out of court.
In April, 2012, the New York Times reported that Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, was fined $1.2 billion by an Arkansas Judge for minimizing and/or concealing the dangers associated with Risperdal.  On November 4, 2013, Johnson & Johnson announced that it agreed to pay approximately $2 billion in fines and plead guilty to one criminal charge related to the marketing of Risperdal.  Hundreds of civil lawsuits have been filed against Johnson & Johnson related to the side-effect gynecomastia.  The lawsuits, by men and boys who took Risperdal in their adolescence, allege that the manufacturers of Risperdal failed to warn them about the risk of developing breast tissue, failed to adequately research and disclose this devastating side effect, and promoted off-label uses of the drug through kickbacks to doctors and at least one pharmaceutical supply company.
Risperdal was approved to treat schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder in young boys aged 5 to 16.  Some off-label uses include treatment of ADHD and autism.  Risperdal is believed to block dopamine, which causes the pancreas to produce increased levels of prolactin, which in turn causes breast growth and milk production in some boys.  The physical effects of gynecomastia can be treated with liposuction or mastectomy, but the psychological effects can last indefinitely.  Because of the powerful effects of Risperdal, you should not discontinue its use without consulting with and gaining approval from your doctor - it can be very dangerous to stop using Risperdal without the advice and guidance of your doctor.
If you or your son suffered abnormal breast growth as a result of taking Risperdal, contact one of our attorneys for a free consultation.  Johnson & Johnson has already begun settling cases and you may be entitled to compensation for your medical bills, embarrassment, pain and suffering.
